Children develop a love for learning from lifelong habits of learning during their earliest school years, and we are committed to ensuring that our students feel enthusiastic, capable, and successful by providing a respectful and nurturing Primary School community.
Beginning in K4, students learn the importance of civic purpose and the responsibility for one’s own behavior. Through guided practice, students work to develop skills of collaboration, independence, and the fundamentals for a strong work ethic.
We celebrate the rich diversity that we have among our student body and professional community, and we work to foster inclusion and equity as a means to establish a solid foundation for the future of our students.
The social and emotional well-being of our students is central to our focus. We foster it through skillful community-building behaviors modeled and explicitly taught by our qualified teachers and professional community leaders. We also understand the importance of promoting the development of social skills and the values of respect and responsibility for ourselves, for others, and for the environment.
The Primary School academic program provides a strong foundation of concepts and skills in the areas of:
|Social studies||Physical Education|
In all curricular areas, concepts are introduced at the concrete level and become more complex and detailed as the student’s knowledge and reasoning abilities advance. Teachers provide dynamic and innovative lessons through hands-on activities, simulations, field trips, community engagement, and multimedia projects. We differentiate our instruction to meet the needs of all students through our workshop model. With the addition of coaches and counselors, we strive to meet the needs of the whole child.
During their time in Primary School, students will encounter diversity in a myriad of ways.
Through honoring our individuality and unique perspectives, learning about groups different from ourselves, and truly beginning the long process of how to accept differences, these make for a rich curriculum and allow all of our students to be seen and heard.
Primary School tackles the work of social justice in a variety of developmentally appropriate ways through picture books, discussion around equity, social justice through the lens of our Four Core Values, and the OLWEUS bullying prevention and intervention program.
Research shows that emotional intelligence is associated with a wide range of positive outcomes among children, including improved cognitive and social functioning, psychological well-being, and higher academic performance. In developing higher emotional intelligence, students are more engaged, behave in more prosocial ways, and learn better.
In order to support this development, Primary School has a collaborative Student Support Services team comprised of our Associate Principal, two counselors, and our Intervention Coach who work together to foster the development of academic, behavioral, and social-emotional well-being.
These individuals work with the community to provide a supportive learning environment, positive social skill development, and emotional balance. We believe in community and family and strive to provide it for our students. At Primary School it is imperative to have joy in our learning.
